LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Blackstone Valley Regional Tech’s Erin Wood, South St. Paul’s Elise Barnes, Warhill’s Keely Rochard, Seaman’s Lauren Mills and Conrad’s Tristin Achenbach have been named MaxPreps/NFCA National High School Players of the Week for contests played May 23-29.
East Region – Erin Wood (Blackstone Valley Regional Valley Tech – Upton, Mass.)
Wood hit .769 (10-for-13) with a pair of doubles, 12 RBI and five runs scored. Recording a hit in all five contests, she enjoyed three multi-hit contests, including a 4-for-4 outing with four RBI and three runs scored against Abby Kelley Foster. Wood also knocked in four runs with a triple versus Sutton. She added two RBI against Keefe Tech and Northeast Metro Regional Valley Tech.
North Region – Elise Barnes (South St. Paul (Minn.) HS)
Barnes batted .667 (8-for-12) with a double, two home runs, nine RBI and seven runs scored over four games last week. The senior was hit twice and walked for time, attributing to a .778 on-base percentage. She drove in five runs with a long ball and scored three times in a 14-10 victory over Kennedy. Barnes also left the yard, went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and two run scored in a 9-5 win over Highland Park.
South Region – Keely Rochard (Warhill HS – Williamsburg, Va.)
Helping Warhill to pair of victories and the Conference 18 title, Rochard went the distance in shutouts over Poquoson and Park View. The junior’s top performance of the week came in the championship game where she held the Dragons to one hit and struck out 12 in a 1-0 victory. A day earlier in the semifinals, she sat down eight Islander and did not walk a batter in a one-hit, five-inning gem. Rochard chipped in offensively against Poquoson going 1-for-3 with two RBI.
South Central Region – Lauren Mills (Seaman HS – Topeka, Kan.)
Mills, a utility player, enjoyed a perfect week at the plate, reaching base safely in all nine plate appearances, courtesy of five hits and four walks. Three of Mills’ five hits were round trippers, which attributed to her eye-popping 2.800 slugging percentage. She also knocked in five runs and scored four more. In an 11-1 win over Aquinas, the sophomore utility player went 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBI. She also homered in a 5-1 victory over Valley Center and a 3-2 triumph against Shawnee Heights.
West Region – Tristin Achenbach (Conrad (Mont.) HS)
Senior Tristin Achenbach closed out her high school career in style. In the Montana State tournament, Achenbach twirled three no-hitters, including a perfect game, lifting Conrad to a 2016 state championship. For the week, she was 4-0 with three shutouts, a 0.19 ERA and 57 strikeouts to just three walks in 24 innings of work. She held her opposition to three hits and a minute .036 batting average. She struck out at least 11 in all four starts, including 16-of-18 batters in a six-inning perfecto against Huntley Project. Achenbach also fanned 16 in a 4-0, three-hit shutout versus Columbus. In addition, Achenbach provided plenty of offense, batting .615 (.8-for-13) with five doubles, nine RBI and six runs scored.
