Chelsea Clinton Thinks Friend Ivanka Trump Can Do Better
Just like that dog and bird whose friendship went viral, we can’t help but root for the unlikely friendship between Chelsea Clinton and Ivanka Trump—if only for its shock value.
The latest news about their unusual relationship, however, makes it appear that things are on the rocks.
In an interview with The Guardian published over the weekend, writer Decca Aitkenhead asked the former First Daughter of her thoughts of our current First Daughter, specifically regarding Trump’s recent trip to Jerusalem for the opening of the U.S. embassy—a controversial event that was made even more contentious as a bloody confrontation took place miles away.
“She’s an adult. She can make the choices for herself,” said Clinton of Trump’s actions. “I mean, she’s 36.” Clinton, herself 38, went on to explain how she handled her own disagreements with mom Hillary Clinton when the latter first ran for president in 2008.

“I was really proud to support my mum—but I disagreed with her fundamentally on a few things, particularly her then opposition to equal marriage rights for LGBTQ Americans,” she said. “I never defended that position, because it wasn’t what I believed was the right thing to do.”
When it comes to Trump’s Large Adult Sons, Clinton has the same thoughts. “They’re adults who’ve made the decision to work in this administration,” she says. (She notes she would have not gone to work for her mom’s administration had she won.)
Despite their headbutting politics, Trump and Clinton no doubt share commonalities—both are the blonde daughters of a powerful family with New York society ties—and this link, as well as apparently agreeable personalities, has served as a foundation for their long-lasting friendship. “[Ivanka]’s always aware of everyone around her and ensuring that everyone is enjoying the moment,” Clinton gushed to Vogue in 2015. “There’s nothing skin-deep about Ivanka.”
Despite the vitriol between their parents, the friendship somehow survived the election—but not, apparently, the Trump presidency. Like your high school bestie whose life suddenly veered in the opposite direction of your own, the duo “haven’t formally fallen out, but Clinton says they haven’t spoken in ‘a long time.'”
Some things just aren’t meant to last.
