FKA Twigs’s Tumors Were So Massive “It Was Like Being 6 Months Pregnant”

FKA Twigs became popular for twisting, turning, and voguing on stage to her alt R&B tracks (oh, and for also once calling Robert Pattison her fiancé), but the British star revealed she wasn’t able to move as lithely last year due to a health battle.

In a rare Instagram post, the notoriously private star shared that she underwent laparoscopic surgery to remove six fibroid tumors from her uterus in December. The tumors, she said, were the size of two apples, three kiwis, and several strawberries, and a nurse told her that their “weight and size was like being 6 months pregnant.”

The post shows Twigs back in fine form, easily maneuvering her body about a pole—but she didn’t always believe that dancing would still be possible. “I tried to be brave, but it was excruciating at times and to be honest I started to doubt if my body would ever feel the same again,” she wrote, explaining that despite the support of family and friends, her confidence fell to the ground. “Today whilst dancing with Kelly at the choreography house I felt like my strong self again for the first time in a while and it was magical.”

The tumors she developed aren’t a rare occurrence. According to the National Institutes of Health, most women in America will develop fibroids—which in Twigs’s case turned into tumors in the wall of her uterus—at some point in their lives. A study found that 70 percent of white women and 80 percent of African American women had fibroids by age 50.

Twigs tossed up words of encouragement for those in pain. “I know that a lot of women suffer from fibroid tumors and I just wanted to say after my experience that you are amazing warriors and that you are not alone. You can get through this,” she added. “And with this I let go of the pain… love always twigs.”

Hopefully, she’ll soon get back to doing this again.
