Juncker to staff: Discuss EU future with friends and family

‘I hope that every one of you will personally get involved,’ Commission president writes.

Jean-Claude Juncker, the president of the European Commission, has called upon his staff members to discuss the future of Europe with their friends and family, a letter obtained by POLITICO shows.

“Think about what kind of Europe you want to see by 2025 and what it would mean concretely, and then engage with your friends, family, acquaintances and everyone else,” Juncker wrote.

The letter was sent on March 1, the same day the Commission presented its white paper on the future of Europe, which sets out five scenarios for the bloc as it prepares to mark the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome and start negotiations on Brexit with the U.K.

“I hope that every one of you will personally get involved,” Juncker wrote to his staff, urging them to share thoughts and ideas outside the office.

“We must now open a new chapter of our European project,” the Commission president wrote. He told staff their contribution was needed so that commissioners “can make use of them in their political work in the months ahead.”

He said that discussions would help the European Council draw conclusions by the end of the year and decide on a course of action before the European Parliament elections in June 2019.
