SAVAGE, MN — If there’s anything sweeter than a boy and his dog playing fetch, it’s a boy and a neighbor’s dog when they’re separated by a tall board fence. Savage, Minnesota, mom Erin Richter posted the video of a her son’s friend, Conway, playing with the neighbor’s dog on social media, where it has been viewed more than 8 million times.
It is something to see. Conway tosses the ball over the fence. Quickly, a big Labrador retriever named Dozer appears from the other side, throwing it back. The toddler returns the ball, and on it goes.
Chad Nelson wrote in Facebook that his 2-year-old son has a new best friend.
“Erin Richter’s neighbor’s dog Dozer and him won’t let fences get in the way of their friendship,” Nelson wrote.
Chad Nelson, a photojournalist for KARE television station in Minneapolis, said his son likes playing fetch with dogs, but his family’s poochs won’t play along.
“Conway just loves playing catch,” Nelson said. “We have two dogs but neither one will play fetch. So he was pretty excited to have someone that would.”
Nelson told KARE he’s surprised at the response to the video.
“It was just a cute thing,” he said. “We just thought Conway was being cute and our friends would like it and all of sudden it’s being shared to thousands of people.”
Richter is surprised by the popularity of the video, too. The game is a standard routine for her son, Landon, and Dozer.
“They play ball every time they are both outside,” she told KARE. “Landon quits throwing once the ball becomes too slobbery but Dozer will keep dropping balls or bones over until he has to go inside!”
In a week filled with troubling and tragic news, the video is a well-timed antidote.
“This is our normal,” she told ABC News. “But we love that it is making everyone smile.”
