Witnessing Greatness in RI’s Goddard Park, Say Hello to NY’s Katelyn Tuohy

Over this past weekend, NER was at the Jamestown Half Marathon on Saturday starting at 7:00 am (included in the next issue of NER) for a big day in the country’s smallest state as later in the day in nearby East Greenwich’s Goddard Park, the Girls Championship 5K would take place at 12:30 pm (much more in the next issue of NER).

 

The big attraction here was the presence of the top high school girl in the nation—16 year old North Rockland (NY) junior Katelyn Tuohy.

 

During her high school rein, NER had a cover featuring NY’s Mary Cain with the headline: Witnessing Greatness. The same held true for those at Goddard Park.

 

Two years ago we were reporting that NCAA D1 College coaches were already scouting the frosh. Now the question is whether Tuohy will turn pro after high school (though Mary Cain’s experience may give pause).

 

Per usual, Tuohy was alone covering the relatively flat and fast Goddard State Park course. The real news was that she was covering it at a 5:11 per mile pace (the 1st mile in 4:57) as she hit the finish line in 16:06.87.

 

XC courses vary greatly and this was easier than most, but among all 5K XC courses, this puts Tuohy No. 1 all-time, eclipsing the 16:23.4 set by Colorado State’s Katie Rainsberger (now at U. Washington) in 2016.

 

Tuohy was over two minutes ahead of runner-up Elizabeth Sullivan of Portsmouth (RI) in 18:21.53. Of particular note, of the 1,000 boys who competed in various divisions, Tuohy’s time was second only to the 15:49.79 run by St. Anthony’s (NY) senior Matt Payamps.

 

Tuohy holds the distinction in 2017 of being the only Gatorade HS Athlete of the Year in two sports (track, xc) and was recently on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
