Mavericks Tested at Tracy Borah Duals

GUNNISON, Colo. – Minnesota State (3-3, 1-0 NSIC) competed in the Tracy Borah Duals in Gunnison Colorado Saturday. There they faced several nationally recognized squads, serving as an early test for the Mavericks as they began their 2017 schedule finishing 1-3 at the duals.

Minnesota State won three matches in their first dual meet of the day at the Tracy Borah Duals. The Mavericks were first matched up against a Western State team that has been receiving votes in the latest national poll. The Mavericks fell behind early and a decision victory by Louie Sanders (R-Fr., 141 lbs.) over Seth Rich secured Minnesota State’s first team points of the dual. Adam Cooling (Sr., 174 lbs.) and Matthew Blome (Fr., 184 lbs.) were the only other Mavericks to gain victories against Western State that resulted in a final team score of 13-36.

In their second dual of the day the Mavericks took on another program that has received votes in the national poll and wrestlers ranked at the 141, 157, and 165-pound weight classes, Colorado Mesa.Paul Selman (So., 133 lbs.) picked up the first victory against Colorado Mesa. A close match saw Selman come away with a decision in the first sudden victory round by a score of 6-4 over Michael McDanial. The Mavericks gained victories again at the 174-pound and 184-pound weight classes for the second straight match. Cooling won a sudden victory match against Bruno Nicoletti 4-2, to keep his record against division II opponents unblemished. Corey Abernathy (Jr., 184 lbs.) won by an 11-8 decision and Chris Zimmer(Jr., 285) won by fall in 2:52 which resulted in a final team score of 15-31 in the second round of duals.

In the third round of duals Minnesota State defeated New Mexico Highlands in six out of ten matches resulting in a final score of 31-15. Trevor Schultz (Sr., 125 lbs.) got the Mavericks off the mark with a fall in 5:00 in the first match of the dual. Sanders and Close added an 11-5 decision and 21-2 technical fall respectively to make the lead 14-6 through five matches.

The second half of the dual would see three more Maverick victories to seal the win. Cooling earned a 21-2 technical fall and Abernathy secured a fall in 3:37. Blome had a fall in 2:20 while wrestling up a weight class in the Mavericks win over New Mexico Highlands.

Minnesota State would face the 12th ranked California Baptist University in their last match of the day. The Mavericks won three matches against the lancers finishing with a final score of 15-33. Schultz again led the Mavericks off with a win, starting the match with a fall in 3:21. Dylan Herman (Jr., 157 lbs.) would add a second fall at the 157-pound weight class. The 174-pound match was the only match of the day for the Mavericks that saw two nationally ranked wrestlers take the mat. Cooling ranked third nationally won by a 4-2 decision against Nolan Kistler, the ninth-ranked wrestler.

Tracy Borah Duals Results

The Mavericks will return to Minnesota to take on Saint John’s in Collegeville on Wednesday before returning to their NSIC schedule against Minnesota State Moorhead on Saturday, January 14.
