St. Cloud State gains top NSIC preseason Rankings

The St. Cloud State University wrestling team has gained a pair of top rankings in the 2014-15 preseason polls for the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and the NCAA Division II Super Region 3. The Huskies were ranked first in the NSIC preseason poll, while they gained a fourth place ranking in this year’s NCAA regional poll.

In the regional poll, SCSU charted 33 points behind top ranked Maryville (45). Ouachita Baptist was ranked second in the regional poll with 37 points and McKendree was ranked third with 34 points. NSIC rival Augustana was ranked fifth with 20 points, while Upper Iowa was ranked seventh with 14 points and Mankato was ranked 10th with seven points.

In the NSIC preseason poll, SCSU topped the charts with 65 points ahead of runner-up Upper Iowa with 43 points and Augustana with 40 points. Mankato (37), Southwest (24), Moorhead (19), Northern State (8), Minot State (4) and Mary (0) completed the NSIC poll for 2014-15.

Individually, the Huskies were led in the preseason polls by junior Clint Poster. A two-time All-American, Poster gained the top spot in the regional and NSIC polls at 157-pounds.

At 285-pounds, sophomore Austin Goergen was ranked second in the regional poll and first in the NSIC preseason poll after gaining All-America status in 2013-14 at SCSU. Senior Jay Hildreth was also ranked second in the regional poll and first in the NSIC preseason poll at 149-pounds for the Huskies. Hildreth placed fourth at the NCAA finals last year and gained All-America status for SCSU.

At 165-pounds, two-time All-America Gabe Fogarty was ranked second in the NSIC preseason poll and fourth in the regional poll for the Huskies.

At 125-pounds, sophomore Tanner Johnshoy was ranked second in the NSIC poll and third in the regional poll after finishing as a national qualifier in 2013-14.

At 133-pounds, SCSU newcomer Tim Prescott was ranked fourth in the NSIC poll and seventh in the regional poll. SCSU sophomore Mike Rhone also gained a third place NSIC ranking and a seventh place regional ranking at 141-pounds.

At 174-pounds, sophomore Clayton Jennissen was ranked second in the NSIC preseason poll and fourth in the regional poll. He was a first-time national qualifier for the Huskies in 2013-14. At 184-pounds, SCSU’s Dylon Braun gained a fifth place regional ranking and a second place ranking in the NSIC poll. The rankings for SCSU was completed by sophomore Uthman Raibu, who received a fifth place ranking in the NSIC at 197-pounds and an eighth place ranking in the regional preseason poll.

The Huskies finished their 2013-14 season with a 19-1 overall record and won their third consecutive Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championships with a perfect 8-0 record. The Huskies placed sixth as a team at the 2014 NCAA Division II championships and gained a third place finish at the 2014 NCAA Division II Super 3 Regional.

SCSU also charted a third place finish at the 2014 NWCA Division II National Duals tournament. The Huskies were consistently ranked among the nation’s top 10 teams throughout the 2013-14 campaign and they finished the season ranked sixth in the final DII national polls.

The Huskies will resume 2014-15 competition at their annual Black/Red Classic, which will be held on Thursday, November 6 in Halenbeck Hall at 7 p.m.
