“The American people gave Donald Trump a mandate tonight,” Karen Giorno, a senior adviser to the campaign, told The Hill by telephone at 2 a.m. Wednesday as the results were still coming in.

“If they don’t get behind him the elephant will most likely go the way of the dodo,” she added, referring to the GOP’s symbol.

“I’m telling you right now,” she said, her voice filled with emotion. “This is historic.”

Giorno declared that if Trump wins, then the Republican Party’s leaders “better wake up and understand that if they do not heed the American people the Republican Party is jeopardizing its existence and relevance.”

The Associated Press projected that Trump would win the White House at about 2:30 a.m. after declaring he would take both Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. Neither state had been won by a Republican nominee in decades.

Giorno, who has exhibited fierce loyalty to Trump throughout the campaign, said the symbol of the lion holds special significance to Trump. It’s in his Scottish crest, she said, “and if you look on all the social media the way the American public display their view of him it’s often a lion.”

“They see him as a lion,” she said. “The lion takes care of his pride. The lion is the king of the jungle. The lion is the leader. The lion is Donald Trump.”
