SATURDAY NEWS UPDATE
WWE
In a parody of Tom Cruise’s recent rant on “Mission Impossible 7” crew members for breaking COVID-19 protocols, WWE uploaded “leaked audio” from Kayla Braxton of Intercontinental Champion Sami Zayn berating a stagehand after the Sami Awards segment on last night’s SmackDown. The segment featured Zayn hosting the awards and giving himself the Comeback of the Year and Match of the Year awards before there was a mix-up and Big E won Superstar of the Year. Big E then appeared and attacked Zayn. WWE hasn’t announced if Zayn and Big E will be facing each other at TLC tomorrow.
Last night’s Talking Smack featured another interaction between Kevin Owens and Paul Heyman. It ended with Owens telling Heyman to call him after he defeats Roman Reigns and wins the Universal Championship at TLC.
In a sneak peek clip from his WWE Chronicle episode that premiered today, Owens spoke about why he couldn’t enjoy his first Universal Championship reign.
The Miz, Beth Phoenix & Natalya, Heyman, and Cedric Alexander & Shelton Benjamin are appearing on tomorrow’s pre-TLC episode of WWE’s The Bump. The Bump will air on the WWE Network and WWE’s digital platforms at 4 p.m. Eastern time.
Otis told Fox Sports about being one of the big men in WWE recently assigned to undergo more training at the Performance Center: “I think it’s always been there. It wasn’t like, ‘Hey, we were told this and that.’ That Performance Center is a tool for us to get better. If another big man wants to come up to me and wants to work on stuff, or vice versa. We’re always working. So, that report was kind of funny at the same time. We’re never not working. Especially now that we don’t have live events, so we can’t really get our stuff out. It’s just bottled inside in a little bottle. Right now it’s like, we’re not getting that stuff out there. So, we’ll find more and more ways to get in the ring with each other. Which, nothing beats a crowd. That’s the one thing I miss to this day is that crowd, man. Feeling that rush from there. The acceptance, you know what I mean? Especially my favorite towns. Milwaukee? Good lord. Yeah, Milwaukee. We’re not getting that out so much. But now it’s time to get better. It really hasn’t been set dates, there hasn’t been set anything. It’s just, like, when you want to come in, brother. Or I’ll talk to Braun about something, so me and Braun will do curls for about thirty minutes. Then, let’s talk about something over here. So, it’s always been there. I don’t know why it came in a big report gimmick. But, yeah, I don’t know.”
Sasha Banks spoke to ProSieben MAXX about a potential Evolution 2 and Queen of the Ring tournament: “A Queen of the Ring tournament on a whole pay-per-view for itself would be really freakin’ cool. But I’ve been waiting for Evolution 2 for a very long time. So maybe we can do that first, and maybe we can [start matches] at Evolution 2 for the Queen of the Ring tournament. Maybe something like that can happen. But that’s up to you. You guys have to tweet Vince [McMahon]…make sure you keep on tweeting him so we can have that in 2021.”
The New York Post has an interview with Lana.
Wesley Blake and his wife former Tough Enough winner Sara Lee are expecting their third child.
Ben Carter tweeted after it was officially announced that he’s coming to NXT UK: “One day I’ll wrestle @WWERollins and everyone will rejoice. Remember this tweet.” Carter trained at Rollins and Marek Brave’s Black and Brave Wrestling Academy.
WWE’s YouTube channel uploaded Adam Cole vs. Finn Balor for the NXT Championship from the December 18, 2019 episode of NXT, Beth Phoenix & Natalya vs. LayCool in a tables match from TLC 2010, and The Miz vs. Bray Wyatt from TLC 2019.
Other Wrestling
AEW has filed trademarks for AEW Elevation and AEW Dark.
Game Changer Wrestling owner Brett Lauderdale responded to WWE applying to trademark “The Collective”: “Everything is gonna be ok.” The Collective is the name GCW uses for their set of WrestleMania week events, which feature shows from GCW and other promotions. This year’s Collective took place in October and was moved to Indianapolis after being rescheduled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. WWE’s trademark filing states that it’s for “Wrestling exhibitions and performances by a professional wrestler and entertainer rendered live and through broadcast media including television and radio, and via the internet or commercial online service; providing wrestling news and information via a global computer network; providing information in the fields of sports via an online community portal.”
In his latest article for ROH’s website, Kevin Eck revealed that ROH will be making an announcement regarding their January shows tomorrow: “Look for an announcement this Sunday across ROH’s platforms regarding shows in January. It’s something I’m certain fans are going to enjoy, but I can’t say more than that.”
During his post-match interview after retaining the ROH World Championship in the main event of Final Battle, Rush teased a feud between La Faccion Ingobernable and The Foundation. La Faccion Ingobernable features Rush, Dragon Lee, Kenny King, La Bestia del Ring, and Amy Rose. Jay Lethal, Jonathan Gresham, Tracy Williams, and Rhett Titus are in The Foundation.
Sports Illustrated interviewed Rush ahead of last night’s PPV.
Mike Bennett posted after the angle at Final Battle where Vincent Marseglia and Bateman attacked his ankles with a steel chair: “I wanted to wait till later this week to address my ankle because I didn’t want it to take away from #FinalBattle. But I think it’s better to get it out there & move past it. I have a hairline fracture in my ankle. Recovery time is about 6 weeks. I’ll be back sooner. @ringofhonor”
CMLL’s PPV that was scheduled for Christmas Day has been canceled due to updated COVID-19 restrictions in Mexico City.
