Bordeaux’s appeal against relegation to third tier accepted by CNOSF

As reported by L’Équipe, the French Olympic Committee (CNOSF) has this morning given a favourable reply to Bordeaux’s appeal over their administrative relegation to the third tier due to their financial issues.

After their relegation to Ligue 2 at the end of last season, the club were unsuccessful in their hearing with the DNCG – French football’s financial watchdog – over what was seen as an unconvincing plan to counter a €40m deficit.

A subsequent appeal with the French Federation was also unsuccessful, meaning the club were at risk of disappearing from professional football entirely given their high running costs for a third division team.

The decision is only an advisory one, though, and the club’s inclusion in the second tier in time for the start of the season this weekend is subject to approval from the FFF.

Young forward Sékou Mara’s move to Southampton for a total fee of €13m appears to have been decisive, with the Saints deciding to pay the transfer fee for the Frenchman rather than wait for Les Girondins to go down, as was the case with other clubs interested.
