Why Julia Roberts Is Done With Rom-Coms

If you cried all the tears when Edward “rescues” Vivian after leaping out of a limousine sun roof in Pretty Woman, or when Will races across London to Anna’s hotel to profess his love in Notting Hill, we’re going to ruin your day — because those stories are not getting sequels.

Julia Roberts, rom-com queen and star of both of the above, is done with the genre for the time being. The actress spoke to Entertainment Tonight on Sunday, and Roberts admitted she felt she had too much life experience to plausibly play a romantic comedy heroine.

“There came a point in my career where people thought I had turned on romantic comedies, which I love them, I love to be in them, I love to watch them,” Roberts said. “But sometimes, they just don’t work at a certain point of life experience.”

“Unless we [play] the parents of the people that are rom-com-ing,” she added.

To clarify, her point has little to do with age. “It’s not about age, it’s just about what people know that you know,” she explained.

It seems she’s following through on that assessment — her latest project, Homecoming, is a drama that has Roberts playing a former government caseworker who helps soldiers after they come back from war.

Not exactly Notting Hill, now is it?
