Single-sky proposal back on the agenda
Proposals to make the European airspace more efficient, which have been discussed for over a decade, are back on the table again.
Transport ministers from the EU’s member states will return to discussions on the Single European Sky (SES), a proposal to unite Europe’s national
airspaces, at a meeting in Brussels on Wednesday (3 December).
The discussion will have the limited aim of further developing the initiative, which the European Commission hopes will improve the organisation of European airspace. The plan has been on the table since 2004 but has lacked political impetus.
Last Friday (21 November), the Association of European Airlines (AEA) said that streamlining the EU’s national airspaces would save airlines €3 billion a year and consumers €6bn a year.
But member states have been tepid in their support for SES and there has been much resistance among national air-traffic control authorities.
Talks on the fourth railway package, which aims to complete a single European railway area, are expected to go much more smoothly. On Wednesday the ministers are expected to agree on a general approach to legislation that removes irregularities in EU law and reduces red tape, to make the EU’s rail industry more competitive.
The ministers will also be briefed by the European Commission on satellite navigation and road transport issues, as well as developments in aviation safety since Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 was shot down over Ukraine in July.
